As promised, here’s an extract of another story from my upcoming dark fantasy/horror collection, CREEPS.
The story is called PASSENGER, and this extract is from a little over halfway through the story. Needless to say (but i’ll say it anyway), the extract contains SPOILERS, but nothing that will completely ruin the story, I feel.
The three Spawn spore, hive-minded to their progenitor, sensed no threat from the humans, so concentrated their attention toward the daemon. Pax remained motionless at the back of the bus, but those electric-blue eyes blazed.
One of the spores oozed across the floor, another across the ceiling, the third squeaking along the windows, leaving a smear trail. They paused three-quarters of the way along the bus, then the spore on the floor suddenly sprang towards Pax, six viciously barbed tendrils bursting from flesh hardening to a carapace.
Twin bolts of blue lightning streaked from Pax’s eyes, consuming the spore. Its smoking husk landed at his feet. The remaining blobs screeched static and quivered with rage.
Incapacitating shock dulling to an invasive horror, Arthur made to retreat into his driver’s box. His trousers, still round his ankles, disputed the action, and he went sprawling to the floor. The woman remained bent over the luggage compartment, exposed and oblivious.
The Spawn-mind learned from its first attack, evolving strategically for the next. The spore on the ceiling dropped to the floor, transforming into a stumpy four-legged beast the size of a German Shepherd, its flesh hardening to rock cracked with magma veins. Steam exhaled in curls from its snout, and a thin jagged tongue licked out from its vicious maw. The spore on the window transformed into a creature not unlike a scorpion, but with leathery, bat-like wings. It flew at Pax as the volcanic dog leapt.
At last the daemon moved, the dark mist around him swirling to hurricane ferocity. In one expansive hand he held aloft a ring of silver the size of a compact disc, dark energies cascading from within. He held his other hand clenched before him, spinning blades mounted upon a device around his wrist gathering incredible pace.
